AUSTRALIAN, 1924 – 2010
Portrait of and tribute to Theo Batten
watercolour on art paper, 38 x 57
signature lower LHC and citation in ink along bottom edge
Gift of the artist, 2007
Allan Waite’s portrait of his great friend Theo Batten, generous Manly Art Gallery & Museum benefactor, depicts the many facets of Batten’s life: talented artist, illustrator and cartoonist; entertaining musician and performer; and adept writer. Theo Batten was known as being extremely gregarious, charming and witty.[i] He became famous for his cartoon strips Lucky Cat and Feathers which were featured in the Women’s Weekly and Woman’s Day magazines amusing fans for almost a decade.
Theodore Harley Batten was born on 11 June, 1918 in Neutral Bay. At the age of sixteen he gained a cadetship at The Sun newspaper and studied part-time at the National Art School before becoming the senior artist for the newspaper. While enlisted in the Cartographic Corps in Second World War II from 1940 to 1945 he displayed his talent as a musician, singer and performer entertaining troops in musical revues. Theo Batten married in 1949 and left to travel to Europe staying on in London for the next five years working as an illustrator for the English advertising agencies. His work was appreciated by the agencies for its’ spontaneity and freshness. [ii] He returned to Australia in December 1959 in pursuit of warmer weather. Theo Batten moved to Manly in the 1980’s and died on 2nd May 2003 at the age of 84. Just before he died, with no children to leave an inheritance to, he discussed with Manly Art Gallery & Museum about leaving the proceeds of the sale of his Manly apartment worth more than $700,000 to the Gallery. In 2003 the Theo Batten Bequest Fund and the Theo Batten Youth Art Award were established. It is the most generous gift the Gallery has received to date which is why the largest gallery is named in his honour.
The artist and friend Allan Waite was born in 1924 in Goulburn and it was by chance that he became interested in art as a young boy. Like his good friend Theo Batten he served in World War II. He was assigned to New Guinea to the Signals unit. He studied art after the war under the Commonwealth Reconstruction Training Scheme at East Sydney and Strathfield Technical Colleges. His working life centred on an engraving business which he established with friends, becoming the company director. Only on his encroaching deafness, caused by the war, did Alan Waite pursue a career in painting. He loves to paint outdoors and he established the Plein Air painters of Australia. He has been a long term member of many art societies including the Peninsular Art Society. He recently donated many of his watercolours and oils of the Peninsula and North Sydney to Manly Art Gallery adding to the relevance of the Manly Art Gallery & Museum art collection.

Woman under a shower, 1976
etching, edition 83/100, 75 x 53
Signed LR 'Brett Whiteley'
Gift of Vesta Davies, 1999
Brett Whiteley is widely regarded as an innovative artistic genius and one of the most important figures in Australian art history. His extensive body of work encompasses a wide range of media and subjects including landscapes, interiors and still lifes, figure paintings, nudes and animals. Whiteley travelled and exhibited widely, starting with his success in England with the inclusion of the young artist's work in the now legendary exhibition, 'Recent Australian Painting' at London's Whitechapel Gallery in 1961, following a sojourn in Italy on an Italian Government Travelling Art Scholarship. In 1978, he became the first and only artist to win all three of the Gallery’s prestigious painting prizes; the Archibald (portraiture), the Wynne (landscape) and the Sulman (subject/genre).
This work Woman under a shower was created in 1976 when he was living at the Lavender Bay house and is one of many figurative works he did of his muse and wife, Wendy. Whiteley's figurative works with their feminine, elongated forms, seemingly endless curves and overt sensual energy are among his most celebrated. These celebrations of the feminine form appear consistently from the mid sixties for the next three decades[i].
Whiteley's was an expert draughtsmanship with a masterful understanding of the figure. This etching also celebrates his admiration of Matisse with its distinctive, expressive use of line and exaggerated perspective. The work was created during a period of drug addiction which began in 1974, an addiction which eventually lead to his death. Barry Pearce purports that in some ways, ‘we may read a number of his interiors of the period as incarcerations, intensely celebrative on the surface perhaps, but... exuding a strong sense of self-induced imprisonment’[ii]. The whole pattern of Whiteley’s life was ‘written into his drawing and painting – its scintillating brilliance, ecstacy and its foreboding’[iii].
After returning from one trip in the early 1970s, he spent six months renting with a group of friends in Binya Road, Palm Beach. In the garage of the house, he painted the portraits of Rimbaud and Baudelaire for his 1972 ‘Portraits and other emergencies’ exhibition, held at the Bonython Art Gallery, Sydney. Whiteley’s legacy is continued through the Brett Whiteley Studio in Surry Hills, which he bought in 1985, and the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship, both administered by the Art Gallery of NSW.

Mangrove Country, Hawkesbury River – Protection, 2009
hand carved paper, shellac, pigment print, 108 x 108
titled and signed upper RHC verso
Purchased by the Gallery with the assistance of the Theo batten Bequest, 2009
In the work of contemporary artist Joshua Yeldham is a strong sense of spiritual connection to the land. While depicting place, the works are also endowed with an intimacy and personal knowledge that is felt powerfully by the viewer. His landscapes are highly personal and often a journey of prayer, blessing and private contemplation. Mangrove Country, Hawkesbury River – Protection that draws attention to his exploration of the fragility yet timelessness of the Australian landscape, and the need to protect it. This work on paper was purchase through the Theo Batten Bequest in 2009 from Arthouse Gallery, making it one of the most recent additions to Manly Art Gallery & Museum’s permanent collection.
Joshua Yeldham lives on Pittwater in Sydney’s north and travels by boat, painting en plein air, exploring and drawing on the Hawkesbury River for inspiration. He believes that this river country provides the opportunity for nature, art and inner prayer to collide whereby the river has become his living connection to the natural world. ‘I camp out on the river for days, carving, sitting, meditating in the stillness… Mark-making links me to time, sorrow and joy; it strips me down to what I have inside’[i].
Mangrove Country, Hawkesbury River – Protection is made up of continuous lines that flow across the image echoing the rhythmic ebbs and flows of the mangrove flats and Hawkesbury River tides. The paper has been manipulated to challenge both the medium and visual expression. With a simple carving tool, and a limited colour palette of black and coral, the artist explores form and texture, drawing attention to nature’s details. Colouring, spiraling and filling space, allows for shapes and patterns to emerge. This mark-making appears like growing cells which reflects the cycle of life and death.
Yeldham’s major painting Motherland, 2008 was hung in the Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW as well as In Paradise: Artists of the Northern Beaches held at Manly Art Gallery & Museum in 2009, an exhibition which celebrated the artists of this region. His works have also been hung in the Sulman Prize, Mosman Art Prize and Salon des Refuses among others and his work is represented in private and public collections.

Young, William Blamire
AUSTRALIAN, 1862 – 1935
The mountain, c.1938 Watercolour on paper mounted on cardboard, 35 x 28
Signed LL watercolour 'Blamire Young'.
Gift of the Gallery Committee, 1967
Born in Yorkshire, England Blamire Young arrived in Australia in 1885 at the age of 22 to teach mathematics at Katoomba College after gaining a Masters Degree at Cambridge University. Through the University of Cambridge Fine Art Society, Blamire Young developed an interest in art especially in the emerging Aesthetic movement. (The Aesthetic movement was an English art movement of the late nineteenth century dedicated to ‘art for art’s sake’. Art was solely an aesthetic experience concerned with beauty independent of any social or moral purpose.)
Young set up a studio at Katoomba College which became a centre for artists and writers and taught mathematics for eight years before pursuing a career in the arts. He was multi-talented; first concentrating on designing posters and then turned to interpreting the Australian landscape imaginatively through watercolour. He saw the attempt by the European artist to interpret the Australian landscape realistically as futile. The Mountain (c1938) displays his strong sense of design. The landscape is strikingly simplified and through his innovative use of watercolour he creates a luminous and dramatic sense of light and colour.
Blamire Young’s watercolour technique was complex:
“Beginning with saturated paper, he would apply the colours separately in wet flooding washes until, in the process of combining or repelling, the contours began to suggest the subject. The addition of materials such as sugar helped to give a granular effect. Using saucers of colour, Blamire Young would tilt the paper in various ways to allow the colours, while still wet, to settle into forms. Creating extraordinary effects, with a mixture of brilliant and cool colours,(Young) was convinced that his was the ideal medium in which to convey his fantasies of the Australian countryside.”[1]
He also was a noted Melbourne Herald art critic, fine draughtsman and illustrator, a connoisseur of wine, a member of the National Rose Society of Victoria, designed ladies’ gowns and wrote two short plays.

Study for Psalm 37, 1989
ink, pencil and watercolour on paper, 127 x 152
Signed LR 'Zofrea 89'
Gift of Lesley Walford through the Cultural Gifts Program, 1998
Painter, printmaker and draughtsman, Salvatore Zofrea is one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists who has pushed the boundaries of his own art practice. He has explored different media such as woodcut and fresco and challenging himself with the sheer scale of some of his paintings and commissions, as well as the ambitious project of 1994-99 to produce the Apassionata woodcut series of 100 woodcuts detailing his life and which he subsequently gifted to the Art Gallery of NSW. Zofrea is particularly known for his portraits and commissioned works.
The Gallery owns fifteen artworks by Zofrea which includes the major paintings Psalm 64 - Midnight minuet, 1997, and Psalm 90 - Self portrait of a life, 1999, which was donated by the artist. This work, Study for Psalm 37, is part of The Psalm series in which the artist reinterprets the spiritual ‘songs’, adapting them to contemporary events and the artist’s own experiences. He explores the tension between the spiritual and the worldly desires that make up our lives. In his work, Zofrea continuously draws on the traditions of European art and the Renaissance period through his techniques and ecclesiastical subject matter. This contrasts with his prints and paintings of the Australian flora and landscape which are expressive and full of movement.
In 1956, aged nine, Salvatore Zofrea emigrated from Italy with his family. They first lived at Brookvale then bought property at Seaforth where the artist still has his Sydney studio. Zofrea retains a strong sense of attachment to the Northern Beaches region; ‘The grand promenade and beach at Manly always astounds me. Manly Dam was a big childhood haunt on weekends and after school… all my emotions and memories are here. This is where I evolved as an artist’[i].
Salvatore Zofrea studied at the Julian Ashton Art School and privately with H.V. Justelius from 1961-66. He has been hung numerous times in the Sulman Prize, received the Churchill Fellowship in 1986 and was knighted by the Italian Government in 1995 to become Cavaliere Salvatore Zofrea for his services to the arts. Manly Art Gallery & Museum has exhibited his work numerous times, including exhibitions in 1998 and 2003.
